What Marketing Techniques Are Used by Ukrainian Supermarkets and What to Do in Case of Deception

Ukrainian supermarkets and stores are increasingly employing various marketing techniques to attract customers, among which promotional discounts are particularly popular. However, sometimes consumers encounter situations where the advantageous price promised on the price tag does not match the one indicated at the checkout.

Consumer Rights in Case of Price Discrepancy

The State Consumer Service reminds us that if the amount stated at the checkout is higher than that indicated on the price tag, the buyer has the right to insist on payment at the price shown on the price tag. This information is what influenced the decision to make the purchase. According to current legislation, supermarkets are obliged to adhere to the stated prices.

“If the price stated at the checkout is higher than that indicated on the price tag, the buyer has every right to demand payment at the specified amount – as it was this price that influenced the purchasing decision.”

In addition, laws require that any advertisement for discounts or sales contains clear and accurate information. In particular, it must specify the location and duration of the promotion, as well as indicate how much the price has been reduced compared to the previous one or what percentage discount is being applied. If the buyer’s rights are violated and store representatives refuse to resolve the situation in accordance with the law, it is advisable to contact the territorial body of the State Consumer Service in your region.

Exchanging Promotional Goods: What You Need to Know

The State Consumer Service emphasizes that supermarkets, stores, and other retail establishments are obliged to exchange non-food items purchased during promotions if the product is in proper condition. Refusal to exchange such goods is a violation of the law.

  • The buyer has the right to exchange the product within 14 days, excluding the day of purchase.
  • If the seller has set a longer period, the exchange is allowed throughout that entire period.

At the same time, for an exchange to occur, the product must not have been used and must retain its marketable appearance, consumer properties, seals, labels, as well as the receipt issued along with the product.
