Ukrainian supermarkets and stores are increasingly using promotional offers and discounts to attract customers. At the same time, consumers should be particularly vigilant, as the price of a product on the shelf often differs from the one scanned at the checkout. In such cases, the buyer has the legal right to purchase the item at the price indicated on the shelf, as that is the basis for their purchasing decision.

What to Consider During Promotions and Discounts
The State Consumer Protection Service emphasizes the importance of carefully reviewing all information provided on product labeling. This is especially true for products with significant discounts — it is essential to check the expiration date of food items to avoid unpleasant situations.
“We remind consumers of the importance of carefully examining the mandatory information about the product, which is indicated on its labeling. When the price is significantly reduced, special attention should be paid to the expiration date of the food product.”
Moreover, according to current legislation, advertisements for sales and discounts must contain clear information: where and when the promotion is taking place, as well as the amount or percentage of the discount relative to the previous price. If a store violates consumer rights and refuses to meet legitimate demands, it is necessary to contact the territorial office of the State Consumer Protection Service in your region.
Consumer Rights and Restrictions for Security Personnel in Stores
According to experts from the “Consumer Rights Protection” organization, in many supermarkets, security personnel work through separate security companies and are not employees of the retail outlets. Consequently, they do not have the right to demand compensation from customers for accidentally damaged goods or dictate how to handle them. In such cases, it is recommended to contact law enforcement authorities.
If a security guard insists on payment or demands compensation, the customer should request a review of the surveillance camera footage to support their position. However, as specialists note, even this does not always guarantee justice, so in complicated situations, it is best to call the police.
