The US and Russia have restored the postal exchange, suspended in March 2022. The first batch of shipments from the US has already arrived in the RF — delivery is being carried out via transit flights through third countries.
Reasons for the Suspension of Postal Exchange in 2022
In March 2022, the United States Postal Service (USPS) stopped accepting international shipments to Russia. This occurred against the backdrop of the imposition of sanctions and significant restrictions on transportation links between the countries. For more than four years, postal imports from the US to the Russian Federation were blocked. Only at the end of May 2026 did operators from both countries agree to restore this route.
Key Goods and Significance of the Route
The import of postal shipments from the US for customers of the Russian postal service is of strategic importance. Before the suspension in 2022, the monthly volume of such shipments exceeded 50 tons. The majority consisted of e-commerce goods: clothing, footwear, electronics, as well as food supplements.
In 2025, the US remained the largest source of export shipments for Russian mail — accounting for one-fifth of all export volumes. By the end of 2025, the Russian operator resumed accepting shipments to the US in the categories of “Gift,” “Documents,” and “Commercial Sample.” As of today, Russian Post claims the ability to send parcels and correspondence to 163 countries worldwide.
It is worth noting that a recent face-to-face meeting took place between the CEO of Ukrposhta, Igor Smilyansky, and the US Postmaster General, David Steiner. However, both the Ukrainian and American postal companies remain unprofitable.
