One of Spain’s leading banks, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), has announced the launch of cryptocurrency trading and storage services for retail clients in the Spanish market. Users can now buy, sell, and store Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through the BBVA mobile app.

Innovative Approach to Cryptocurrency Services
BBVA has implemented its own infrastructure to provide new cryptocurrency services without relying on third-party providers. This allows the bank to ensure a high level of security and control over transactions. Currently, the two most popular cryptocurrencies—Bitcoin and Ethereum—are supported, but the bank has announced that the list of digital assets will be expanded in the future.
The relevant application was submitted by BBVA to the National Securities Market Commission of Spain (CNMV) back in March 2025. It was already reported that the new service would become part of the bank’s mobile platform, making investment in digital assets even more accessible to a wider range of clients.
Support for the Cryptocurrency Industry and Future Plans
Gonzalo Rodríguez, head of retail banking at BBVA in Spain, emphasized the importance of this step for clients:
“We want to make it easier for our retail clients in Spain to invest in crypto assets through a simple and accessible digital solution on their mobile phones. Our goal is to support them in exploring digital assets, backed by the strength and security of a bank like BBVA.”
In addition to launching the service in Spain, BBVA has already implemented similar cryptocurrency services in Switzerland and Turkey. The bank actively supports the development of the cryptocurrency industry and recommends that its clients allocate between 3% and 7% of their investment portfolio to digital assets. According to bank representatives, the main goal is to provide the best investment and transaction solutions for clients in the cryptocurrency sector.
