Growing Threat of FPV Drones in the Region

According to the president, not only is there the use of Iranian kamikaze drones known as “Shahed” in the Middle East and Gulf countries, but there is also an increasing number of cases involving FPV drones. Zelensky emphasized that this represents a new level of warfare that must be prepared for.

“We are already seeing that not only are the ‘Shaheds’ striking there in the Middle East and the Gulf, but there are also more and more reports of the use of FPV drones. This is modern warfare that we need to be ready for,” he stated.

The president highlighted that Ukraine possesses significant experience in countering these threats, but simultaneously requires support in defending against ballistic missiles and funding for the defense sector. Kyiv offers mutually beneficial cooperation with countries in the region aimed at strengthening security for both sides.

Partnership with the Middle East and U.S. Response

Zelensky noted that currently, only coordinated and joint actions can provide real results and security in the world. He stressed the need to seek additional opportunities to enhance defense capabilities, considering the risks of aid being blocked by European partners. The president believes that expanding cooperation with countries in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf has strategic prospects for Ukraine.

At the same time, work continues with European allies to expand joint defense projects, particularly in the field of drone production. Zelensky reported that Ukrainian specialists are already collaborating with five countries to combat Iranian “Shahed” drones in the region, and new requests are coming in from other countries.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly refused again on March 15 to provide assistance to Ukraine in countering Iranian drones. He stated that the U.S. does not need such assistance, adding that “the last person we need help from is Zelensky.”

Earlier, in early March, Zelensky announced Ukraine’s readiness to provide support to Middle Eastern countries in countering attacks from Iran, including by involving Ukrainian experts to work on-site. According to the Financial Times, the U.S. and one of the Persian Gulf countries are considering the possibility of purchasing Ukrainian interceptor drones. At the same time, Iran has declared that Ukraine is a “legitimate target.”
