Reasons for the dismantling of the Bulgakov monument
The decision to dismantle was made by the Kyiv City Council on December 18, 2025. The basis for this step was the conclusion of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. Experts noted that objects dedicated to Mikhail Bulgakov are part of the symbolism of Russian imperial policy. The conclusion was prepared in accordance with the law of Ukraine “On the Condemnation and Prohibition of the Propaganda of Imperial Policy in Ukraine and the Decolonization of Toponymy”.
“The basis for the dismantling was the professional conclusion of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory regarding the affiliation of objects dedicated to the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov to the symbolism of Russian imperial policy. The conclusion was prepared in accordance with the law of Ukraine ‘On the Condemnation and Prohibition of the Propaganda of Imperial Policy in Ukraine and the Decolonization of Toponymy’,” the Kyiv City State Administration reminded.
The fate of the monument after dismantling
It is known that the sculptor’s heiress had previously requested to be given her father’s work for personal safekeeping. This monument was dismantled on the grounds that Bulgakov’s figure is included in the list of individuals used by Russian propaganda to glorify imperial policy, and related objects must be removed from public space. Journalists documented the dismantling process and published videos from the scene on social media.
