During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the International Federation of Football (FIFA) will implement a new official gesture to combat instances of racism on the field. Players who witness racist behavior will be able to cross their arms in front of their chests to draw the referee’s attention.

“To report an offense, players must cross their arms in front of their chests.”
Once the referee notices this sign, they will be required to initiate a special three-step procedure as part of FIFA’s “No to Racism” campaign. In the first step, the match is suspended; if the incident repeats, a 15-minute break is announced with the teams leaving the field, and in the case of a third offense, the game is stopped completely. This rule was first tested at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia in 2024.
