Mid-November 2025 marked a significant decrease in onion prices in the Ukrainian market. Wholesale prices for this vegetable currently range from 4 to 9 hryvnias per kilogram, which is on average 15% lower than a week ago. Compared to the same period last year, the cost of onions has nearly halved — down by 42%.

Main Reasons for the Price Drop
The main factor behind the price decline is a substantial increase in the supply of low-quality onions. Due to prolonged rains during the harvest, a significant portion of the onions turned out to be unsuitable for long-term storage, prompting farmers to sell their products as quickly as possible. As a result, sellers are forced to lower their selling prices to avoid losing their goods. The share of non-standard onions currently exceeds last year’s figures by at least twofold.

Current Onion Prices in Different Chains
In supermarkets across Ukraine, prices for bulb onions are also showing a decline, although they remain higher than in the wholesale market. For instance, in the Novus chain, a kilogram of onions costs 7.49 hryvnias. In Silpo, yellow bulb onions are priced at 11 hryvnias per kilogram, while in ATB, the price is 7.95 hryvnias per kilogram.
Analysts predict further price drops for onions in Ukraine, which is linked to the increasing supply in the domestic market. Farmers with high-quality products are currently holding them in storage, hoping for a change in trend. Meanwhile, the market is saturated with low-quality vegetables, which continues to exert downward pressure on prices.
