ICOs Could Become the Main Trend in the Crypto Market in 2026 — Expert Forecast

The Chief Investment Officer of Bitwise, Matt Hougan, suggests that the cryptocurrency market may anticipate a new wave of popularity for Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) in 2026. In his opinion, this capital-raising tool has the potential to become one of the key trends of the future, gradually approaching the level of traditional IPOs.

ICOs as an Effective Alternative to IPOs

In a recent analytical note for Bitwise clients, Hougan noted that despite the numerous drawbacks of the first wave of ICOs in 2017–2018, this method of raising investments has significant advantages. In particular, the expert emphasized the simplicity of the process, the absence of regulatory barriers, less burdensome fees, and a fairer asset distribution mechanism compared to traditional IPOs. Hougan believes that crypto assets are already significantly impacting the transformation of the financial sector. He predicts that Bitcoin could become the digital equivalent of gold, while stablecoins will gradually replace fiat currencies.

“Each of these opportunities has strong growth potential. At the same time, raising capital through ICOs remains a relatively unexplored but promising area.”

Prerequisites for a New Wave of ICOs

According to the expert, one of the main prerequisites for launching a new wave of ICOs was the launch of a special capital-raising platform by Coinbase. This platform is designed to include only vetted projects, which minimizes the risks and main drawbacks of this tool.

In his note, Hougan also highlights the position of SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, who was one of the first to recognize the potential of ICOs and included this mechanism in the priorities of the Project Crypto initiative. The SEC is working on creating transparent mechanisms for the legalization and support of such investment-raising tools.

The expert predicts that by 2026, several large-scale ICOs raising over $1 billion could emerge in the market. Although these figures lag behind traditional IPOs, the successful execution of such campaigns will demonstrate the potential of this direction for other market participants.
