Ukraine Plans to Localize Production of Swedish Gripen Fighters by 2033

Ukraine intends to initiate large-scale localization of the production of Swedish Gripen fighters by 2033. This was announced by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, emphasizing that it involves organizing large-scale assembly and manufacturing of individual components at Ukrainian enterprises. A corresponding memorandum of understanding has already been signed between the Ukrainian company and the fighter manufacturer Saab.

Supply Planning and Financial Support

According to the minister, Ukraine insists that the supply of Gripen aircraft should begin as early as next year. Meanwhile, the Swedish Ministry of Defense noted that Stockholm is considering the possibility of financing part of a major deal that involves Ukraine purchasing up to 150 Gripen fighters.

“Stockholm may finance part of a major deal that involves Ukraine acquiring up to 150 Gripen fighters.”

Sweden has also presented this deal to the leaders of the Coalition of Willing countries, which may potentially join in financing the project.

Partnership in Defense Innovations

In addition to the localization of production, the Ministries of Defense of Ukraine and Sweden have signed a Letter of Intent regarding partnership in the field of defense innovations. The document aims to develop new formats of cooperation and integrate Ukrainian enterprises into the European innovation-industrial space. The Ukrainian side proposed to consider the possibility of joint development of surface-to-air missile interceptors and the production of modern radars.
