The Impact of Dogs on Mental Health
A study conducted in 2019 and published in the journal Animals found that people who interacted directly with dogs experienced a significant decrease in anxiety levels and an improvement in mood compared to those who did not have such interaction. The Mayo Clinic also confirms that interacting with pets can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and increase oxytocin levels, which are responsible for emotional bonding and trust.
Certified dog trainer Evan Doggett, who works with the SpotOn Fence GPS Fence team, shared his thoughts on five dog breeds that are best suited to help owners overcome anxiety.
Breeds That Best Support People with Anxiety
- Newfoundlands. Often referred to as “gentle giants” due to their calm demeanor, resilience, and deep attachment to humans. Newfoundlands are perfect for those seeking emotional grounding, but it is important to remember that their thick fur requires regular grooming.
“Giant love bugs” is how Doggett describes this breed, emphasizing their natural gentleness, which is why they are often chosen for therapy.
- Labrador Retriever. One of the most popular breeds in the U.S. for nearly twenty years. Labradors are known for their friendliness, ease of training, and desire to please. This is why they are most often used as therapy dogs.

- Golden Retriever. Valued for their gentleness, sensitivity, and ability to establish strong emotional connections. Thanks to their gentle nature, Golden Retrievers are ideal for ongoing therapeutic support.

- Poodles. Noted for their high intelligence, playfulness, and independence. According to the expert, Poodles learn quickly and always try to assist their owners in challenging situations, remaining calm even in noisy environments.

- Whippets. Despite their reputation as fast runners, Whippets display a calm demeanor at home and can be wonderful companions for therapy. They require physical activity but remain calm and balanced indoors.

Each of these breeds has unique traits that help people overcome anxiety and find emotional balance. However, before getting a dog, it is important to consider the breed’s characteristics and your own lifestyle to ensure proper care and comfort for the animal.
