In supermarkets and stores, Ukrainians may encounter refusals to accept certain banknotes and coins on the grounds of not having change. However, such behavior from employees is a violation of the law, and in such situations, it is recommended to file a complaint with the management of the respective establishment.

Experts from the organization “Consumer Rights Protection” note that cashiers are obligated to accept money of all denominations. It is important for cash registers to have the necessary funds for giving change, and these responsibilities must be fulfilled independently by the store employees. The requirement for a customer to have a specific amount of change is an unlawful shifting of the cashier’s responsibilities.
“The problem of ‘I don’t have change’ is not yours, but the cashier’s. If the cashier continues to say this, contact the store management and inform them that the cashier is shifting their responsibilities onto you,” the experts explained.
Violation of Consumer Rights by Security Guards
Another issue that customers may face is the violation of their rights by security guards in supermarkets. Often, these employees work through third-party companies and are not representatives of the stores themselves. They do not have the right to demand payment from consumers for damaged goods.
If security guards insist on such payment, this is also a violation of the law. Consumers have the right to contact the police in such cases.
“Security guards do not have the right to dictate what to do with the goods – often they do not represent the store. If they force you to pay for damaged goods, this is a gross violation of many articles of the Law of Ukraine on ‘Consumer Rights Protection.’ Therefore, you can contact law enforcement agencies,” the specialists explained.
