The Ukrainian onion market may undergo significant changes in the second half of the current marketing season, which falls in spring. This opinion was expressed by agro-expert Oleksandr Khorev, who analyzed the main trends in the industry.

Spring Outlook: Prices and Product Quality
According to the expert’s forecasts, a moderate increase in prices for quality onions, which can be stored until this time, is expected in March-April. However, the volumes of such products will remain limited, and the final results will largely depend on the level of storage and the implementation of modern technologies in production.
“In March-April, a moderate increase in prices for quality products that can be stored until this period is expected. However, the volumes of such onions are limited, and the final result will depend on the quality of storage and the availability of modern technologies in farms.”
Challenges for Ukrainian Farmers
Unlike Western European countries, particularly the Netherlands, where modern drying chambers are used for storing crops, such technologies are only being implemented by a few farms in Ukraine. This creates significant risks for maintaining the quality of onions and their sale during the off-season.
Currently, the Ukrainian market shows all signs of overproduction: low prices, financial losses for farmers, and significant volumes of losses due to outdated or inefficient processing and storage methods.
Despite the establishment of record-low prices this season, an increase in value may be observed in spring when stocks of quality products become scarce.
Experts advise producers to invest in modern drying and storage systems, as well as to carefully plan the planting areas for onions. Without such measures, the problem of excess production and sharp price fluctuations may recur every year.
