Poland Leads the EU in Employment of Ukrainians, but Attitudes are Deteriorating

Poland and Germany are the leaders in the number of employed Ukrainians in Europe. This was confirmed by Lydia Tkachenko, a senior researcher at the Institute of Demography and Social Research. In Ukraine, due to less stringent language requirements and opportunities for employment without special conditions, the majority of Ukrainians found jobs in Poland.

Attitudes of Polish Society Towards Ukrainians

Germany, although having a lower percentage of employed Ukrainians, is constrained by stricter requirements, particularly regarding language proficiency. However, attitudes towards Ukrainian refugees in Poland are gradually changing. A study conducted by the University of Warsaw showed that criticism and negative emotions towards Ukrainians are increasing in Polish society.

“Among Poles, there is an increasing manifestation of criticism and negative emotions towards Ukrainian refugees,” noted Dr. Robert Stanishevsky, one of the authors of the study.

Approximately 40% of respondents believe that the presence of Ukrainians poses threats, such as an increase in crime and issues with law enforcement. Some even consider that the involvement of Ukrainians in addressing labor market shortages could be a threat.

As of early February, there were officially about one million Ukrainian refugees in Poland.
