Melon Prices in Ukraine Increased by 40% Due to Shortage and Bad Weather

In Ukraine, there has been a significant increase in melon prices over the past week. The average cost of this crop has risen by approximately 40%, which is linked to a simultaneous decrease in market supply and challenging weather conditions. As of August 2025, farmers are selling melons in bulk at prices ranging from 26 to 40 UAH per kilogram.

Reasons for the Rapid Price Increase of Melons

The key factor driving up prices has been the seasonal reduction in supply. Most farms in the southern regions have already completed the harvest of early melon varieties, while the new harvest of late varieties is not expected until the end of August. This pause has led to a temporary shortage and, consequently, an increase in prices.

In addition, this year’s unfavorable weather conditions have significantly affected the quality of melon crops. Many farms are reporting issues related to heavy rains, sharp temperature fluctuations, and heat. This has reduced the proportion of marketable fruits, decreasing the volumes of commercial batches available.

“The summer season is traditionally accompanied by high demand for melon crops. Ukrainians are buying melons en masse for fresh consumption and home preservation, which further stimulates price growth.”

Another significant factor contributing to the price increase is the strong demand from consumers. During the summer, melons are particularly popular, which additionally influences market conditions.

Current Market Situation and Store Prices

As of mid-August 2025, farmers are offering melons wholesale directly from the field at prices of 26 to 40 UAH/kg. In comparison, in August 2022, this price was almost three times lower. Experts estimate that this situation is unprecedented for the Ukrainian market and is due to a decrease in production volumes.

It is forecasted that after the late melon varieties appear on the market, the situation will partially stabilize; however, a significant decrease in prices is not expected. Production conditions remain challenging, and farmers’ costs are high.

Retail prices for melons are also on the rise. In supermarkets, they range from 39 to 43 UAH per kilogram. The largest retail chains have recorded the following prices:

  • Varus – 54.90 UAH/kg;
  • Silpo – 50 UAH/kg;
  • Fora – 59.90 UAH/kg.

Thus, the melon market in Ukraine is responding to the reduction in supply and unfavorable weather conditions with a steady increase in prices, which may continue in the coming weeks.
