How Ukrainians Can Work in Poland: Is a Work Book from Ukraine Necessary

As a result of the full-scale war, thousands of Ukrainians have been forced to relocate to Poland in search of safety and stable income. Poland has become one of the main countries providing refuge to our citizens while simultaneously simplifying employment procedures for Ukrainians.

Employment Rules for Ukrainians in Poland

Ukrainians who are legally present in Poland have the opportunity to work without obtaining a separate permit. This right is guaranteed by the provisions of the Law of March 12, 2022, “On Assistance to Citizens of Ukraine in Connection with the Armed Conflict.” For official employment to begin, the Polish employer must submit an electronic notification to the district labor office (Powiatowy Urząd Pracy) within 7–14 days after hiring.

At the same time, the Ukrainian work book is not recognized as an official document for legalizing work in Poland. Employment is only possible under a Polish employment contract: umowa o pracę, umowa zlecenie, or umowa o dzieło. All these types of contracts have legal force but differ in terms of social protection and taxation features.

Additional Requirements and Tips for Employment

Citizens of Ukraine with temporary protection status or other legal grounds for staying in Poland are exempt from the obligation to obtain a work permit. However, the employer must comply with all procedures: notify the relevant labor office and ensure a salary not lower than the minimum established by Polish law.

“A work book from Ukraine can only be used as proof of experience or qualifications, but not as a work permit.”

Lawyers advise carefully reviewing the terms of the contract before signing and, if necessary, seeking assistance from a translator or labor law specialist.
