Construction of Vegetable Storage Facilities is Growing in Ukraine: Farmers Prepare for Processing Development

In Ukraine, there is an active development of vegetable storage facilities, especially among small and medium-sized farms. According to experts, such facilities help farmers promptly address local storage needs; however, for maximum effect, the industry requires parallel development of processing capacities.

Regional Dynamics of Vegetable Storage Growth

The most new vegetable storage facilities are being built in Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Chernihiv regions. One of the main reasons for this surge is the significant increase in logistics costs, which has pushed farmers to seek effective solutions for their own vegetable storage.

Currently, the most promising areas for rapid processing launch remain the production of French fries, dried puree, peeled, and ready-to-eat potatoes. Regarding onions, farmers are actively exploring opportunities for peeling, freezing, and drying the product.

European Experience and Prospects for Ukrainian Farmers

In countries with developed agricultural sectors, farmers have already scaled vegetable storage facilities from 3,000 to 30,000 tons and more. Ukrainian producers should aim for a similar development model, which will not only allow them to store their harvest but also ensure the continuous operation of processing enterprises.

“For the stable operation of storage facilities and processing plants, it is important for farmers to form commercial batches and fulfill long-term contracts through professionally managed cooperatives – a model that works successfully in the EU.”

Professional cooperation allows farmers to enter into long-term agreements, form large batches of products, and effectively interact with processors, which is key to the successful development of the vegetable sector in Ukraine.
