Penn’s Visit to Ukraine and Public Reaction
“Ukrzaliznytsia” emphasized that the visit was kept secret “until the last moment,” and only after the actor’s arrival in Kyiv did they officially announce:
“Now we can officially say: Sean Penn chose Ukraine over the Oscars! He arrived in Kyiv via Ukrzaliznytsia. And we can confirm: Sean Penn did not smoke in the vestibule.”
After Penn’s arrival, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a joint photo with the actor, highlighting his ongoing support for the Ukrainian people. Zelensky referred to Sean Penn as a true friend of Ukraine, who has stood by the country since the first days of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation.
Reasons for Skipping the Oscars and the Actor’s Achievements
The American publication New York Times, citing its own sources, reported that the reason for Penn’s absence from the Oscar ceremony was indeed his trip to Ukraine. The actor’s representative declined to comment on this information.
Sean Penn is 65 years old and has already received three Oscar statuettes, including for Best Supporting Actor in the film “One Battle After Another.” He has been nominated for the prestigious Academy Award a total of six times.
