Scientists Identify Key Periods of Rapid Human Aging

Human aging is often perceived as a gradual and uniform process; however, new scientific data suggests otherwise. Researchers have established that in every person’s life, there are at least two distinct age periods when biological aging experiences significant acceleration — approximately at ages 44 and 60. During these moments, the body undergoes the most pronounced molecular changes.

Two “Wave” Stages of Accelerated Aging

A large-scale study involving individuals aged 25 to 75 allowed scientists to analyze the molecular composition of blood, skin, and other biological samples from 135,000 people in detail. It turned out that most key indicators change not gradually but in leaps, forming two distinct “waves” of aging — in the mid-forties and early sixties of life.

The first leap, observed around age 44, has the most significant impact on the cardiovascular system and metabolism. In particular, this relates to the metabolism of caffeine, alcohol, and fats. Researchers note that while menopause or perimenopause may partially explain the changes in women during this time, there are other, more substantial factors that affect the aging process in both men and women.

“This indicates that while menopause or perimenopause may contribute to the changes observed in women around the age of 40, there are likely other, more significant factors influencing these changes in both men and women,” scientists explain.

Changes in Maturity: Causes and Prevention Strategies

The second notable stage of aging occurs around age 60. During this period, the immune system, kidneys, and carbohydrate metabolism undergo significant changes. Age-related changes in skin and muscle tissue also intensify. According to Professor Michael Snyder from Stanford University, this data helps to better understand why the risk of developing many chronic diseases sharply increases after age 60.

Scientists emphasize that awareness of such “critical years” allows for timely adjustments to diet, physical activity, and overall lifestyle. This enables influence on the aging process even before the body enters the phase of acceleration.
