Find at the Ski Resort
The excavations took place on a site currently used by the U.S. Forest Service as the Alta ski resort. It was here that archaeologists managed to uncover a well-preserved glass bottle with liquid, which immediately intrigued experts with its authenticity and condition.
After careful sampling, specialists decided to conduct a tasting. The results exceeded expectations: the liquid retained its clarity, showed no signs of spoilage or contamination, and its aroma was surprisingly pleasant.

Characteristics of the Drink and Future Plans
Isaac Winter, the director of distillation at High West, who participated in the study, shared his impressions of the historic drink. He noted that the aroma had fruity notes, a noticeable scent of leather, and a vivid mark of time.
“The drink clearly retained traces of age, but did not lose its character.”

Analysis of the contents confirmed that it was not a strong alcohol, but likely a low-alcohol beer popular in the late 19th century. From now on, the High West team intends to use modern technologies to recreate the recipe for this drink. This will not only allow them to bring back the taste of a historical era but also to delve deeper into the alcoholic culture of the United States during the westward expansion.
