In Kyiv, over 4,500 units of backup energy equipment, including generators, inverters, and batteries, have been purchased to ensure the uninterrupted operation of heating in residential buildings in case of power outages. The equipment was acquired as part of various co-financing programs.

How Backup Equipment Will Help Kyiv Residents
According to the acting first deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Petro Panteleev, there are many buildings in the capital where heating directly depends on electricity supply. In situations where electricity is supplied for only a short time, such as just three hours, high-rise buildings simply do not have enough time to warm up and remain cold. Meanwhile, those buildings whose residents took advantage of the opportunity to purchase backup equipment through co-financing programs have already resolved similar issues. There are over a thousand such residential facilities in the capital.
“There are buildings where heating depends on the availability of electricity. If electricity is supplied only for a short period, for example, three hours, a high-rise building simply does not have enough time to warm up and effectively remains cold. In contrast, the buildings that were able to take advantage of, among other things, the city’s co-financing programs have already solved this problem. There are more than a thousand such buildings in Kyiv,” Panteleev noted.
Generators — A Key Solution During Extended Outages
The official also emphasized that relying solely on inverters and batteries does not guarantee complete autonomy, as batteries discharge over time, and there may not be enough electricity to recharge them. This is why generators remain the most effective backup solution for stable heating during prolonged power outages.
It is worth noting that on the night of January 9, Kyiv partially lost heating due to another missile strike from Russia. At that time, the electricity outage schedules were canceled and switched to emergency mode.
