OpenAI plans to introduce a new mandatory verification procedure for organizations to ensure access to its future artificial intelligence models through the API. This information was disclosed on the updated support page on the company’s official website.

The introduction of the procedure, called Verified Organization, involves using a government-issued identifier from a supported country to confirm the legitimacy of the organization. It is important to note that one document can only be used once every 90 days, and not all companies will be able to undergo this verification.
Purpose of the Innovation
According to OpenAI representatives, the main goal of implementing this new procedure is to prevent the dangerous or malicious use of the API, as artificial intelligence technologies become increasingly popular and powerful. The company had previously reported attempts to misuse its systems by North Korean groups, as well as other violations of the API usage terms.
“Unfortunately, a small minority of developers are intentionally misusing the OpenAI API, violating our usage policies. We are adding a verification process to mitigate the dangerous use of AI while continuing to make advanced models available to a broader community of developers,” the company stated.
Intellectual Property Protection
In addition to security concerns, the procedure may also serve as a mechanism for protecting intellectual property. In early 2024, OpenAI initiated an investigation into a potential data leak, which media reports suggest may be linked to the Chinese company DeepSeek, likely using a competitor’s API to train its own models. Previously, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei noted that leading American companies in the artificial intelligence field risk becoming victims of cyber espionage, particularly from China.
It is worth noting that the European Union plans to establish a network of AI gigafactories to support competition with China and the United States.
