Onions Prices in Ukraine Have Fallen to a Four-Year Low

In Ukraine, there has been a significant decrease in onion prices for the second consecutive week. The main reason for this is the weather during the harvest: prolonged rains have noticeably affected the quality of the vegetables, which has significantly impacted their suitability for long-term storage.

Price Dynamics and Influencing Factors

Against the backdrop of increasing supplies of medium and low-quality onions, demand in the market has weakened. According to analysts, farmers are currently offering the vegetable at a price of 5–10 UAH per kilogram ($0.12–0.24 USD per kilogram), which is approximately 20% cheaper than at the end of last week. This is the lowest price level in the last four seasons.

“Due to prolonged rains during the harvest, the quality of the vegetables has seriously deteriorated, making them unsuitable for long-term storage. Now farmers are trying to sell such onions as quickly as possible.”

Experts note that the reason for the price drop is the increase in supplies of onions that are not suitable for storage. Producers are eager to sell them quickly before the vegetables lose their marketable appearance.

Onion Prices in Supermarkets

At the same time, high-quality onions are rarely found in the market — farmers are storing them in warehouses, waiting for better prices in the future. Currently, in Ukrainian supermarkets, the price of onions ranges from:

  • ATB: 9.85 UAH/kg
  • Silpo: from 9.80 UAH/kg
  • Varus: 8.90 UAH/kg

Compared to last year, onion prices have fallen by approximately 40%. Experts predict that the trend of decreasing prices may continue if the supply of the vegetable does not decrease.
