The Government of Moldova has decided to introduce a state of emergency in the country’s energy sector for a period of 60 days. This decision is linked to the critical situation in the energy sector caused by massive attacks from Russian drones in southern Ukraine. As a result, there is a risk of rolling blackouts in Moldova, and the final approval of the state of emergency is set to take place at an extraordinary parliamentary session at 5:00 PM on the same day.

Causes of the Energy Crisis in Moldova
The key reason for the introduction of the state of emergency is the disconnection of the strategic high-voltage power line “Isakcha – Vulcanesti,” through which Moldova receives electricity from Romania. The accident on this line occurred on the evening of March 23 during an intense attack by Russian drones on energy facilities in the Odesa region. It is known that explosions were heard in Moldova, and debris from drones was found near the damaged line.
“The reality around us has become harsher. The war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine is hitting the critical infrastructure of the neighboring country. At the same time, it creates chain effects throughout the region and is already directly affecting us here in the Republic of Moldova,” said the head of the government, Alexandru Munteanu.
What the State of Emergency Entails in Moldova
The introduction of a special legal regime will allow the Government of Moldova to respond quickly to changes in energy prices to avoid fuel shortages. Access to emergency funding will also be opened for the restoration of the damaged power line “Isakcha – Vulcanesti.”
The authorities have already urged residents and businesses to maximize electricity savings during peak loads to prevent overloads of existing cross-border power grids. The population is asked to prepare alternative lighting sources, charge necessary devices in advance, and temporarily refrain from using elevators due to possible power outages.
