Global Steel Production Decreased by 2.2% at the Beginning of 2026

Global steel production in February 2026 fell to 141.8 million tons, which is 2.2% less compared to the same period last year. Overall, during the first two months of the year, global steel production decreased by 1.5%, totaling 298.2 million tons. These results were published by Worldsteel based on reports from 69 countries around the world.

Regional Steel Production Indicators

Among the regions, a positive trend continues in Africa: steel production volumes increased by 4% year-on-year, reaching 2 million tons in February. Non-EU European countries also demonstrated production growth of 3.1%, or 3.4 million tons.

In the Middle East, steel production in February 2026 amounted to 3.7 million tons, slightly exceeding last year’s figure by 0.1%. North America added 0.5% to production, reaching 8.5 million tons.

Negative Dynamics in Certain Regions

At the same time, in Asia and Oceania, steel production in February decreased by 1.9% year-on-year, totaling 105.3 million tons. In the European Union (27 countries), 9.8 million tons of steel were produced in February, which is 3.6% less than the previous year.

“Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine produced 6 million tons, reflecting a decrease of 10.5% year-on-year.”

In South American countries, steel production volumes decreased by 7.7% year-on-year, totaling 3.1 million tons.
