The international trading company METRO, responding to Russia’s attacks on the Ukrainian energy system, has built its first solar power plant in Ukraine. This power plant, located in the Vinnytsia shopping center, has the potential to generate 920,000 kWh of electricity per year, which will cover about 30% of the shopping center’s annual electricity consumption.

The 880 kW solar power plant will be an important step towards strengthening energy independence. It will reduce fossil fuel consumption by 900 tons of coal or 1,740 tons of natural gas. During peak hours, the power plant will fully meet the energy needs of the shopping center and will also provide the opportunity to direct excess electricity to local energy grids.
“Investing in the solar power plant is a strategic step towards energy resilience and responsible environmental stewardship,” the company stated.
METRO also plans to install solar power plants with a total capacity of at least 3 MW in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv this year. Over the next five years, the company aims to supply all its shopping centers with solar energy with a total capacity of over 15 MW.
