Experience Exchange and Support for Ukraine
The focus of the negotiations was on the situation in the region, as well as the prospects for strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Syria. President Zelensky expressed gratitude to his Syrian counterpart for supporting Ukraine in the context of the ongoing aggression by the Russian Federation, emphasizing the importance of exchanging military and security experience for both countries.
“We agreed to work together to provide more security and opportunities for development for our societies. We discussed the situation in the region and the prospects for improving it. We also talked about the circumstances of the war of Russia against Ukraine, and I am grateful for the support. There is great interest in exchanging military and security experience. Thank you for your words of respect for our people,” Zelensky noted in a Telegram message and published a video of the meeting.
Food and Energy Cooperation
During the negotiations, the parties paid special attention to food security issues. Ukraine confirmed its readiness to be a reliable supplier of agricultural products for the Syrian market and to explore ways to enhance food security throughout the region. Zelensky also acknowledged the understanding of the energy and infrastructure challenges faced by Syria and emphasized openness to further joint work for the development of both states and their peoples.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that active diplomacy is aimed at ensuring real security and economic interaction, and also reported on the preparation of several important cooperation formats between the countries.
Before his visit to Syria, on April 4, Volodymyr Zelensky was in Istanbul, where he held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
