EU Will Not Extend Trade Preferences for Ukraine After June 2025

The European Union has announced that it does not intend to extend trade preferences for Ukraine after June 5, 2025, when the current trade liberalization mechanism expires. This decision was made based on information from sources within the EU familiar with the negotiations.

According to one European official, after the expiration of the preferences, trade conditions will revert to their pre-war state. This means that the EU intends to propose certain changes for Ukraine.

Changes in Trade Measures

Among the main changes is the cancellation of autonomous trade measures that were introduced by the EU following the onset of Russia’s full-scale aggression. This pertains to both trade preferences and restrictions on certain goods, including chicken meat, eggs, honey, and other products.

Possibility of Maintaining Preferences for Steel

However, the EU is also discussing the possibility of retaining some preferences for Ukrainian steel. European officials emphasize that future negotiations are planned to amend Article 29 of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU. This aims to create favorable conditions for trade and support Ukraine’s economy amid the war.
