Main Reasons for the Rise in Potato Prices
Market specialists indicate that the main factor behind the price increase is the seasonal reduction in supply from Ukrainian farmers, while consumer demand remains consistently high. Producers report a shortage of quality products, making it difficult to form large batches for wholesale buyers. Currently, farmers are offering last year’s potatoes at prices ranging from 6 to 12 hryvnias per kilogram, depending on the variety, quality, and volume of the batch.
“Analysts cite the main reason for the rise in potato prices as the seasonal reduction in supply from Ukrainian farmers against the backdrop of stable consumer demand.”
Price Dynamics and Short-Term Forecast
Despite the fact that there is still a certain amount of cheap potatoes on the market, the share of quality products demanded by supermarkets is noticeably decreasing. Market operators emphasize that stocks in personal households are depleting, which will inevitably lead to further price increases for quality potatoes.
Analysts have predicted that in the near term, retail prices may rise to 18–22 hryvnias per kilogram, depending on the region and sales format. Wholesale prices may reach 10–13 hryvnias per kilogram.
At the same time, experts stress that despite the current price increase, last year’s potatoes are now almost 60% cheaper than at the same time last year.
It is worth noting that the price increase has also affected other vegetables — in particular, farmers are already selling last year’s carrots at prices of 13–20 hryvnias per kilogram.
