Features of White Hydrogen and Its Advantages

The discovered deposit contains what is known as “white hydrogen” — natural hydrogen found in the Earth’s crust. It is considered one of the most promising types of fuel for future energy, as there are no carbon dioxide emissions when using this hydrogen, and the only byproduct is water.

Currently, one of the main obstacles to transitioning to hydrogen energy remains the high cost of producing clean hydrogen, which is often associated with the use of fossil fuels. This is why scientists are focusing on researching natural hydrogen reservoirs that could serve as an alternative to expensive technologies.

Research and Potential of the Deposit

Experts from the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa conducted an in-depth analysis of 35 wells located at depths of up to 2.9 kilometers. Some measurements lasted over ten years, allowing for an assessment of the stability of hydrogen extraction from the depths.

“According to the study’s results, the deposit is potentially capable of producing about 4.7 million kWh of energy annually — enough to power approximately 400 households.”

Scientists emphasize that this discovery could have significant global implications. If similar deposits are found in various countries, natural hydrogen could play a key role in the energy transition, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and allow for the avoidance of large-scale construction of new transport infrastructure.
