In 2025, Ukrainian farmers significantly expanded their potato planting areas by approximately 20%. This move has already impacted the harvest volumes and the price of the vegetable. Analysts note that the best time to purchase potatoes is from late September to mid-October, when prices reach their lowest levels.

Why Potato Prices Are Lowest in Autumn
In autumn, farmers are forced to sell their harvested crops quickly due to a lack of storage, which contributes to lower prices in the market. However, after the harvest is completed and with the onset of cold weather, the price of potatoes may rise. Experts warn that weather conditions, particularly heavy rains and frosts, also affect supply, as it becomes increasingly difficult to store the produce.
“As soon as the rains and severe frosts come, there will be nowhere to store the potatoes, so we will see a decrease in supply in the market,” says a representative of the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers (UAVK).
Yield, Prices, and Imports: What to Expect Next
According to the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers, this year’s harvest shows positive dynamics. Some farmers are already reporting an increase of up to 30% compared to last year; however, final results can only be assessed after the harvest is completed. Currently, farmers have dug up about half of the planted area, so yield estimates are still preliminary.
At the “Stolichny” market in Kyiv, potato prices remain moderate, ranging from 12 to 15 hryvnias per kilogram, which is consistent with last year’s price levels. The future price situation will largely depend on import volumes. The first batches of Polish potatoes have already arrived in Ukraine, with an export price of about 6 hryvnias per kilogram, making it competitive even considering logistics costs.
Experts estimate that in winter, Ukraine will likely increase its imports of potatoes again, as storage facilities for its own harvest remain in short supply.
