The Geography of Watermelon Cultivation is Expanding
Today, watermelons are grown not only in traditional southern regions but also in Chernihiv, Sumy, and even Volyn regions. The development of this crop is supported by new hybrids suitable for cultivation in various climatic conditions. In summer, temperatures even in the northern part of the country reach 32 degrees, allowing for a good harvest.
“Last year, watermelon prices were not out of this world. This year, I think it will be the same. There are plenty of watermelons.”
According to Taras Bashtanyk, president of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association, growing watermelons is a relatively simple and profitable endeavor that does not require vegetable storage facilities. This simplifies logistics and reduces storage costs, which further impacts price stability.
Current Watermelon Prices in Supermarkets and Markets
Ukrainian markets and supermarkets already offer a wide selection of watermelons from both local and imported sources. In the “Silpo” chain, watermelon prices range from 25.3 to 55 hryvnias per kilogram. In “ATB,” the cheapest watermelon costs 19.49 hryvnias per kilogram, while seedless ones are nearly 40 hryvnias per kilogram. The largest price range is offered by “Novus”: here, watermelons can be purchased from 18.99 to almost 70 hryvnias per kilogram.
Thus, Ukrainian consumers will be able to afford watermelons at an accessible price this summer, regardless of their region of residence.
