The European Union’s Special Representative for Sanctions, David O’Sullivan, stated that Washington has not yet engaged in negotiations with the EU regarding Russia’s request to ease sanctions. This issue is one of Moscow’s key demands for reaching a temporary ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.

However, most European leaders have ruled out the possibility of lifting sanctions against Russia unless the country withdraws its troops from occupied Ukrainian territories. This determination by Europe to maintain sanctions pressure on Moscow could lead to a deterioration in relations with the United States, as President Donald Trump insists on a swift end to the war in Ukraine.
“The position of the European Union is that this is a very important lever of influence in any negotiations with Russia, and it should be used, but used wisely and slowly and only in the context of achieving a solution that is a lasting and sustainable peace,” emphasized O’Sullivan.
At the same time, Trump allows for the possibility of partially lifting sanctions on Russia, although he periodically threatens new restrictions if Moscow does not demonstrate seriousness in peace negotiations.
