Verkhovna Rada Calls on the EU to Extend Trade Preferences for Ukrainian Exports

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted an appeal to the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of the EU, as well as the parliaments and governments of EU countries, urging them to extend trade preferences for Ukrainian exports. This decision was made ahead of the completion of the review of the terms of the free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

Call for Review of the Agreement

The Rada emphasizes the need to ensure the operation of a mechanism similar to autonomous trade measures until new agreements between the parties regarding updated annexes to the Association Agreement come into force.

Lawmakers also highlighted the necessity to initiate and simplify negotiations on amendments to the relevant annexes of the Association Agreement, particularly regarding mutual tariff concessions on the import of goods, taking into account the indicators of mutual trade in recent years.

Negotiations with the European Commission

At the same time, according to the Financial Times, instead of ensuring free access to the EU market, the European Commission intends to hold negotiations with Kyiv by June 5 regarding the expansion of trade liberalization under the Association Agreement.

“We are finalizing work on this proposal and will present it to Ukraine as soon as we can,” the EC stated.

The EU is also working on creating a “legal bridge” in case an agreement cannot be reached by the established deadline.
