Railway Security: New Challenges and Advice for Passengers
The Chairman of the Board of “Ukrzaliznytsia”, Oleksandr Pertzovskyi, explained that these measures have become necessary due to the increasing threats from occupiers who are attempting to disrupt the operation of the railway infrastructure. Special devices intended for sabotaging trains are being found more frequently on the tracks. Recent incidents occurred recently: train crews in several cases managed to timely detect and avoid collisions with dangerous devices, and photo documentation tools were found nearby.
“We urge passengers to remain as vigilant as possible. Be aware of everything happening around you – at the stations, near the tracks, when looking out the window! Report any suspicious actions, individuals, or objects to railway staff nearby or immediately to law enforcement,” the official requested.
Pertzovskyi also advised passengers to plan their journeys in advance, considering possible train delays due to enhanced checks and controls. According to him, such delays are quite likely in the near future.
Massive Attacks and the Resilience of Railway Workers
The head of “Ukrzaliznytsia” reported that to date, the railway infrastructure has already suffered over 3,700 attacks. Among them, about 300 cases have been classified as sabotage or terrorist acts, and over 400 as violations of the laws and customs of war. Railway facilities have been targeted with Kalibr missiles, X-22, X-101, guided aerial bombs, kamikaze drones, artillery, and other means of destruction.
The situation remains particularly tense in the south. In Kherson, which is constantly under shelling, passengers are forced to wait for trains in shelters, while railway workers carry out their duties under the constant threat of drones and shelling, maintaining connections even in such difficult conditions.
“Ukrzaliznytsia” continues to operate in an enhanced mode to ensure the safety of passengers and the continuity of railway communication throughout the country, despite massive attacks and numerous threats.
