Ukrainians’ Deposits in Banks Exceed 1.68 Trillion UAH: Structure and Trends

As of early May 2026, the amount of funds in the accounts of individuals and entrepreneurs in the banking system of Ukraine reached a record 1,687.3 billion UAH. During April, this figure increased by 40.1 billion UAH, indicating a strengthening of public trust in banks.

Structure and Currency of Ukrainians’ Savings

The majority of new deposits are in the national currency: in April, deposits in hryvnias increased by 30.4 billion UAH. At the same time, foreign currency accounts also showed growth, adding 9.7 billion UAH in equivalent. Overall, Ukrainians hold 1,103.8 billion UAH in hryvnias, which accounts for 65.4% of the total amount. In foreign currency, there are 583.5 billion UAH, or 34.6% of all deposits.

Regarding the distribution of funds among banks, over 60% of all deposits (60.18%) are concentrated in state-owned banks, while the share of financial institutions with foreign capital is 22.16%. Ukrainian private banks are trusted by 17.66% of depositors.

Trends in Deposit Selection and Capital Distribution

The most popular instrument for storing funds remains demand accounts – they hold 70.78% of the total amount. Time deposits account for only 29.22%. At the same time, Ukrainians predominantly choose short-term deposits: deposits up to 3 months make up 17.83%, while long-term deposits (over a year) account for only 0.69%.

Analysis of bank accounts indicates significant differentiation in amounts: over 40% of accounts have a balance of up to 10 UAH, and most depositors (57.67%) keep between 10 and 200 thousand UAH in their accounts. Meanwhile, over 16% of the total capital is controlled by only 0.03% of clients whose deposits exceed 5 million UAH.

In addition to bank deposits, Ukrainians continue to increase investments in government bonds. According to the Ministry of Finance, by spring 2026, the portfolio of government bonds owned by citizens reached a historic maximum, exceeding 130 billion UAH.
