Ukraine Surpasses Russia for the First Time in Trade Volumes with Germany

For the first time since gaining independence, Ukraine has surpassed Russia in trade volumes with the Federal Republic of Germany. This was reported by Vitaliy Ivashchuk, a representative of the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin.

Trade Between Ukraine and Germany Sets Records

Ivashchuk emphasized that this historic achievement has been possible since 1992, when separate statistics for Ukraine and Russia began to be recorded:

“In 2024, for the first time since 1992, when separate statistics for Ukraine and the Russian Federation have been maintained following the collapse of the USSR, our country has outpaced the aggressor state as Germany’s trading partner,” he said.

According to the embassy representative, the dynamics of trade relations between Ukraine and Germany are notable not only at the intergovernmental level. Significant roles are played by interregional and intercity partnerships that contribute to the expansion of business contacts at the local level.

Cooperation Prospects: Reconstruction, Energy, IT

Vitaliy Ivashchuk noted that currently, the greatest potential for further strengthening cooperation with German businesses lies in areas such as Ukraine’s reconstruction, energy—especially “green” energy—as well as information technology and digitalization. The importance of the defense industry was specifically highlighted, where close partnerships have already been established and significant prospects for further development are opening up in the coming years.
