In 2025, Ukraine exported over 11.2 million cubic meters of biogas to the European Union, confirming its status as a new strategic partner of the EU in the field of renewable energy sources.

Structural Shift in the Biogas Market
According to Serhiy Makohon, former CEO of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine, these export volumes indicate profound structural changes in the Ukrainian energy sector. The main exporters of biogas have become MHP, which accounted for approximately 8.7 million m³ (77% of total exports), VITAGRO with a volume of 2.5 million m³, and Hals Agro — 75 thousand m³. Additionally, Bio-LNG has entered global markets: MHP exported over 5 thousand tons, while UM Liquid Gas exported about 900 tons.
Potential of Agricultural Waste and Economic Impact
Ukraine possesses unique resources for developing this sector: agricultural residues, manure, livestock waste, as well as developed logistics and connections to the EU gas transmission network. Biogas produced from agricultural waste is transformed into exportable dispatchable energy, generating foreign currency inflows for the country.
“At a time when the country critically needs euros and dollars for imports, defense, and recovery, biogas becomes a new item of energy exports alongside grain, metals, and IT,” wrote Makohon.
He emphasized that this is not just “green PR,” but a real energy infrastructure that supports the EU’s climate policy and strengthens Ukraine’s economy.
For further development of the sector, it is necessary to expand production capacities, improve carbon metrics, ensure competitive prices, and implement project financing instead of subsidies. Ukraine is gradually transforming into one of the most interesting biogas hubs in Europe.
Green energy, which includes the production of electricity and heat from inexhaustible natural resources such as sun, wind, water, and biomass, is a key factor for energy independence and achieving climate goals. Ukraine is actively implementing a “green tariff” to stimulate investments and expand this sector.
