The American Association of Distributors and Retailers of Footwear has urged US President Donald Trump to cancel tariffs on shoes, warning of an “existential threat” to the industry. This was reported by Bloomberg.

In a letter signed by companies such as Nike Inc., Under Armour Inc., Puma SE, and the American subsidiary of Adidas, it is noted that the introduction of tariffs could lead to higher shoe prices in the US and the closure of companies.
“Tariffs threaten jobs in the footwear industry and American consumers,” the letter states, describing the situation as urgent and requiring immediate action.
Companies also emphasize that tariffs will not encourage the return of manufacturing to the US, as this requires significant investment and years of restructuring supply chains, which is an expensive and complex process.
Manufacturers highlighted that countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, where the majority of production is concentrated (including half of Nike’s shoes are made in Vietnam), could face the highest tariffs.
