Trump Calls NATO a ‘Paper Tiger’ and Claims Putin Is Not Afraid of the Alliance

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again criticized the North Atlantic Alliance, describing it as weak and ineffective in confronting modern threats. According to Trump, the military-political organization lacks the necessary resources to be a real deterrent to the leadership of the Russian Federation.

Trump’s Criticism of NATO

In a recent interview with ABC News, Donald Trump emphasized the helplessness of the Alliance’s forces, noting that their military might does not instill fear in the Kremlin regime. The American leader highlighted the lack of sufficient ships and other important equipment among NATO countries necessary for effective defense.

“They have no ships, they have nothing, and Putin is not afraid of them at all,” said the American president, using the popular idiom ‘paper tiger’.

Trump clarified that by ‘paper tiger’ he means an organization that appears dangerous but actually poses no threat. This expression gained popularity thanks to statements by Chinese leader Mao Zedong regarding imperialist policies.

Statement on Possible U.S. Withdrawal from NATO

On April 1, Trump again referred to NATO as a ‘paper tiger’ and added that the question of the United States withdrawing from the defense treaty does not require discussion, as he believes the Alliance is no longer fulfilling its functions.

Previously, Trump used the same comparison regarding Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin. The U.S. president has also expressed the opinion that the leadership of Russia should have ended the war against Ukraine within a week; however, the hostilities have dragged on for a long time.
