The USA offers Ukraine and the EU to ease sanctions on the import of Belarusian fertilizers

The United States is urging Ukraine to reconsider restrictions on the import of Belarusian potash fertilizers and to initiate similar changes among European Union countries. The goal of such actions, according to Washington, is to reduce the economic dependence of the Belarusian regime on the Kremlin and gradually distance Minsk from the Russian Federation. Before the imposition of sanctions, the export of potash fertilizers remained one of the main sources of foreign currency revenue for Belarus.

The USA has already eased some of its own restrictions

According to sources, the United States has already taken steps to ease its own restrictions as part of a non-public agreement. As a result, the Belarusian authorities released several hundred political prisoners. However, without similar decisions from the EU, the effectiveness of such measures will be significantly limited, as logistical routes through the Baltic ports remain inaccessible for Belarus, and the country continues to depend on Russian transport infrastructure.

Opposition from the Baltics and Lithuania’s stance

Despite the calls from the USA, the Baltic countries oppose easing sanctions. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the importance of not only maintaining but also strengthening existing restrictions on Belarus, highlighting that the regime in Minsk continues to repress within the country and supports Russia in the war against Ukraine.

“Minsk has not stopped the repression and continues to support Russia in the war against Ukraine.”
