The Recovery of the Construction Sector in Ukraine Slowed Down by the End of 2024

The State Statistics Service of Ukraine has presented the results of the three out of four main sectors of the real economy for 2024. This was reported by the head of the Tax Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Danilo Hetmantsev. He emphasized that the publication of the data was delayed by almost two months, as the statistical calculations were supposed to be completed by the end of January.

Main Economic Indicators

In the transport sector, there is a positive trend: the volume of freight transportation increased by 7.8%, passenger transportation by 6.8%, cargo turnover rose by 13%, and passenger turnover by 10.1%. Compared to 2023, where the growth was +3.4% and +27.3% respectively, 2024 saw significant improvement in the freight segment, but a slowdown was recorded in the passenger segment.

As for construction, volumes increased by 15.5%, although in 2023 the growth was 25%. In industry, production rose by 3.6%, while last year this figure was 6.8%.

Risks of Slowing Recovery

Hetmantsev noted that the reduction in the pace of recovery, especially in industry and construction, raises serious concerns.

“If the construction sector can maintain the indicators achieved last year, it may return to pre-war volumes by 2029, while industry may only do so in ten years, by 2035,” he stated.

In his opinion, the Ministry of Economy should make important adjustments to the image program “Made in Ukraine,” as accelerating the recovery of key sectors of the economy is critically important for the state.
