Verkhovna Rada Increases Maximum Age for Civil Servants to 70 Years

The Verkhovna Rada has made the decision to raise the maximum age for civil servants and local government employees to 70 years. The previous limit was 65 years.

Features of the New Changes for Civil Servants

This provision will be in effect throughout the entire period of martial law in Ukraine and for two years after its conclusion. The changes were made by supporting Bill No. 13574, which was voted for by 243 members of parliament.

Member of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, Fedir Venislavskyi, explained that in wartime conditions, many young civil servants are serving in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This creates a need to retain experienced personnel in public service. He emphasized that many specialists, even over the age of 70, remain capable of effectively performing their professional duties.

As explained by Fedir Venislavskyi, a member of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, in wartime conditions, some younger civil servants are serving in the Armed Forces, therefore the state needs experienced personnel. According to him, there are specialists who, even after 70 years, are capable of performing their duties effectively.

Procedure for Extending Service for Individuals Over 65

According to the law “On Civil Service,” after reaching the age of 65, a civil servant may remain in their position with the consent of the employee and the decision of the appointing authority. The extension of service is formalized annually, but cannot last longer than reaching the new maximum age of 70 years.
