Tesla Halts Production of Model S and Model X, Focusing on Optimus

The American company Tesla has officially ended the production of its flagship electric vehicles, Model S and Model X, which have served as a symbol of the transition to electric transport for 14 years. The production process concluded on May 10, 2026, at the factory in Fremont, California, where a symbolic farewell ceremony for these cars took place.

Reasons for Tesla’s Strategic Shift

The decision to cease assembly of Model S and Model X is linked to a change in the company’s strategy, which has decided to focus on the development of autonomous technologies and robotics. Tesla’s founder, Elon Musk, hinted at the possibility of such a move several months ago, but now it has become a reality and is one of the most significant milestones in the company’s development. The discontinuation of production for these two iconic models marks Tesla’s departure from traditional automotive manufacturing.

“Model S and Model X initiated the global shift to electric transport. These vehicles also allowed Tesla to develop technologies that are driving our world towards autonomy. By making way for an autonomous future, we are halting the production of Model S and Model X.”

Focus on Robotics and Future Plans

From now on, the company’s main focus is directed towards the Optimus project — a universal bipedal autonomous humanoid robot capable of performing dangerous, repetitive, or routine tasks. This direction is considered key by Tesla for the further development of autonomy technologies.

Model S, which debuted in 2012, and Model X, released in 2015, significantly impacted the formation of the global electric vehicle market and became breakthrough products for the company. At the same time, Tesla will continue to produce Model 3 and Cybertruck, and is preparing for the launch of the second generation of the Tesla Roadster sports electric car.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly demonstrated the capabilities of the Optimus humanoid robot — notably, it was recently shown that the robot can perform dance moves, indicating progress in the company’s robotics development.
