Member of the Swedish Parliament Rickard Nordin has called on the government to explore the possibility of creating a cryptocurrency reserve based on Bitcoin. He sent an official request to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson, asking her to consider the feasibility of including Bitcoin in the portfolio of the Swedish central bank.

Nordin emphasized that the role of digital assets in financial policy is actively discussed worldwide, citing the example of the United States. In particular, he mentioned the directive from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the creation of a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
According to the politician, the U.S. is building a stockpile using confiscated Bitcoins, and Sweden could leverage this experience to create its own cryptocurrency reserve. Nordin believes that digital gold could serve as a hedge against inflation and an important tool for financial independence, especially for residents of authoritarian countries.
Budget-Neutral Strategy for the Reserve
The MP proposed a budget-neutral approach. He noted that Sweden should not spend funds from the state treasury to purchase Bitcoins, but could instead hold assets that will be confiscated by law enforcement agencies. This decision would allow the state to form a digital reserve without additional costs.
As of today, the Riksbank adheres to a traditional portfolio consisting of currency and gold. Nordin believes it is time to reconsider this policy in light of changes in financial markets and the growing role of cryptocurrencies.
The official response from the Finance Minister is expected by April 16, 2025. At the time of preparing this material, the authorities had not yet commented on Nordin’s initiative. However, analysts believe that this proposal could stimulate discussions about digital assets as part of the state strategy.
