Slovakia Stops Emergency Assistance to the Ukrainian Energy System: What Will Change

The National Energy Company “Ukrenergo” received an official notification from the Slovak operator SEPS about the unilateral termination of the Mutual Emergency Assistance Agreement. This was reported in a statement from the company’s press service.

Details of the Decision and Its Consequences

In the statement, “Ukrenergo” emphasizes that this decision followed numerous public statements made in February and March. According to the company’s information, the agreement will expire in May 2026. At the same time, the management of SEPS did not provide explanations regarding the reasons for the cancellation of the agreement.

“The final termination of the contractual conditions will occur from May of this year. The reasons for which our colleagues are canceling the agreement remain unexplained by the management of SEPS,” the operator states.

“Ukrenergo” stresses that there have been no violations of the cooperation conditions with SEPS from the Ukrainian side, and the company acted in accordance with the principles of good neighborliness and European legislation norms.

Impact on Ukrainian Consumers and the Energy Market

According to company representatives, the Slovak operator’s decision will not cause changes for Ukrainian consumers. Emergency assistance from Slovakia was rarely used and in insignificant volumes. The last instance of such support was recorded back in January of this year.

“Ukrenergo” also notes that the termination of the relevant agreement will not affect the volumes of commercial electricity exchange between the countries. Electricity imports from Slovakia to Ukraine will proceed as usual, according to the results of daily and long-term auctions for the allocation of capacity at interstate crossings.

It is worth recalling that on March 4, the Slovak state company SEPS publicly announced its intention to terminate the contract with Ukrainian “Ukrenergo” regarding emergency electricity supply. This decision was made by the Slovak government.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that such a decision would only deprive Slovak companies of earning opportunities, as Ukraine will be able to obtain the necessary electricity from alternative sources.
