Power Outages in Sumy Region and Other Areas Due to Strikes and Bad Weather – ‘Ukrenergo’

The energy infrastructure of Ukraine is experiencing new damage as a result of Russian drone and artillery attacks, as reported by the company ‘Ukrenergo’. As of this morning, power outages have been recorded in Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kyiv, and Kherson regions. Where the security situation allows, emergency crews have already begun work to restore electricity supply.

Increase in Electricity Consumption and Reasons

According to the operator, the level of electricity consumption on Wednesday morning increased by 1.3% compared to the previous day. The main reason for this is the cloudy weather in the northeastern regions of Ukraine, which reduces the efficiency of private solar power plants. Consequently, consumers are using electricity from the general grid more actively, which affects the load on the energy system.

Situation in Sumy Region and Recommendations from ‘Ukrenergo’

In the Sumy region, there are additional interruptions in electricity supply due to unfavorable weather conditions. In particular, the strong winds that passed through the region the day before left seven settlements without power. Energy workers are already working to restore the damaged overhead power lines.

“As a result of the attacks, there are consumers without power in Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kyiv, and Kherson regions this morning. Where security conditions allow, emergency recovery work has already begun.”

‘Ukrenergo’ urges citizens to plan their electricity usage so that the main load occurs during the peak operation hours of solar power plants — from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. At the same time, it is recommended to limit the use of high-power electrical appliances in the evening from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Since February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion, attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have been ongoing. In the last autumn of 2025, the intensity of shelling of energy facilities increased, leading to a significant gap between electricity production and consumption, as well as prolonged outages in many regions. With the arrival of spring and the increase in solar generation, some restrictions have been lifted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized at the end of March that Russia continues its attempts to destabilize the Ukrainian energy system through strikes on critical infrastructure.
