Russian Court Sentences Ukrainian Soldier to 15 Years

It is known that the Ukrainian defender, whose name is not disclosed, was captured in October 2024. After that, a court in Russia sentenced him to 15 years in prison. This decision was made essentially for participating in an international armed conflict on the side of Ukraine.

Violations of International Law and New Accusations

The Office of the Prosecutor General emphasizes that the actions of the Russian judge constitute a gross violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the provisions of the Geneva Convention regarding the treatment of prisoners of war.

“The suspect ignored the requirements of international humanitarian law, particularly the provisions of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war,” states the OGP.

The judge of the 2nd Western District Military Court of the Russian Federation has been accused in absentia of violating the laws and customs of war.

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are systematically conducting investigations into Russian judges who issue verdicts against Ukrainian military personnel and civilians. In particular, in September 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine announced in absentia the suspicion of Judge Konstantin Prosto of the Southern District Military Court of the Russian Federation for issuing verdicts against the captured defenders of Mariupol.
