Loss Estimates and Official Statements

On May 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky published updated data on Russian army losses at the front in 2026: over 145,000 individuals, of which nearly 86,000 have been killed, at least 59,000 seriously wounded, and over 800 Russian soldiers have been taken prisoner.

“In particular, among the killed – nearly 86,000 individuals, seriously wounded – at least 59,000 individuals, and more than 800 Russian servicemen have been taken prisoner.”

At the same time, official Moscow continues to withhold its losses. The last time Russia published data was in September 2022, claiming 5,937 dead.

Russian publications “Meduza” and “Mediazona” have released their own estimates of the Russian army’s losses based on named lists: by the end of 2025, at least 352,000 individuals had died, of which 261,000 are “ordinary” dead, and another 90,000 are individuals recognized as dead or missing by court decision or after a delay in death registration of more than 180 days.

International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate Russia’s total losses (wounded and dead) even higher. In December 2025, a NATO representative reported that, according to the alliance’s estimates, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could reach 1.15 million individuals. According to British intelligence in May 2026, nearly 500,000 Russian military personnel have died since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Regarding the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, official Kyiv has long refrained from providing such data, promising to disclose it after the war ends. However, President Zelensky now announces relevant information annually. In February 2026, he reported that since the beginning of the invasion, Ukraine has lost 55,000 military personnel and noted the large number of missing individuals.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, emphasized in January 2026 that in 2025, Ukraine managed to reduce personnel losses by 13%, but did not provide specific figures.
