Ukrainian Drones Complicate Russia’s Logistics and Supply to the Front

The Armed Forces of Ukraine significantly intensified medium-range drone attacks along the front line in spring 2026, leading to serious complications for the logistics of the Russian Federation at the front. This is stated in a new report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Successes of Ukrainian Drones at the Front

Ukrainian military achieved noticeable operational results due to intensive drone strikes on enemy positions and supply routes. In particular, the use of key ground communication lines connecting Russia with occupied Crimea has been significantly complicated, including the M-14 Rostov-Crimea highway, as well as roads between the occupied south of Ukraine and Donetsk. Such actions have already affected Russia’s ability to transport personnel and supply units at the front.

“Successful campaigns by Ukraine using medium and long-range drones limit Russia’s ability to transport personnel to the front, as well as to supply and support positions at the front,” analysts report.

Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized the effect of a “logistical lockdown” for Russian troops achieved through the scaling of drone strike campaigns on the enemy’s logistics routes. Ukrainian forces gained a temporary tactical advantage in the use of drones across several areas of the front.

Impact of Drones on Enemy Actions and Seizing the Initiative

According to ISW, medium-range strikes significantly reduce Russia’s capabilities to deliver reserves and supply units to the front, complicating the conduct of Russian ground operations under current conditions. Ukrainian drones also effectively counter Russian infiltration missions. For instance, on May 26, a pro-Russian military blogger reported that Ukrainian intelligence disrupted several such operations thanks to the active use of drones at the front.

Analysts note that Ukrainian forces have created a wide zone of drone activity from medium range to the front line. However, it remains unclear whether additional mobilization of reserves can significantly improve the combat potential of Russian troops if they do not find ways to effectively counter the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ drones.

On May 21, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized that the Ukrainian side was able to significantly slow down the advance of Russian forces and gradually seize the initiative at the front thanks to the efforts of the military, the use of medium-range drones, and the disconnection of the Starlink system for the aggressor.
